Hens, Eggs, Light And Spring

People who have had layers (that's LAY-ers) always ask the big question in the winter. "Are you getting any eggs?". The first year of a hens life she usually lays all through the first winter, although not necessarily every day. The eggs might be smaller, "pullet" eggs depending on her maturity, but eggs nonetheless. The older hens, which define six of my eight, may slow down as the days get shorter, and after Thanksgiving or so, sputter to almost nil.  This winter we only had two or three days with no eggs at all. My new, adopted Rhode Island Reds, Rhoda and Red, kept us in their nice eggs through out, with an occasional supplement from the older girls.
You may wonder what use there is to keeping these old hens if they don't produce all year, but here at On the Pond Farm, they are also maintenance workers, and do preventative health care. Every day, after their morning feed, they work their way behind me to each stall as I clean them. They scratch for grubs, bugs, parasitic worms in the stool, and left over grain and seeds. By doing this clean up, they make it difficult for rodents to thrive, and parasites to spread.
In the video you see the girls waiting their turn to lay.  Until recently, they all waited to lay in the same box. I think because production is up, they have now split the eggs into two nests.  We used to have more boxes, but they always seemed to put all their eggs in one basket (Ha!). Fine with me, although come summer, I bet they will start hiding them around the barn again.  Always fun to have egg hunts for visiting kids!

All girls appreciated the great summer weather of the past two weeks and were in full production.
Its officially Spring!

Work Weekend

In the winter, the cold - severe cold - helps take care of parasite problems in the barn -and the field. As the warmer weather returns (Yeah! Its snowing outside here again!), extra care is required to keep the little nasty buggers out of the goats' digestive system.
Our 150 year old barn has dirt floors, which has positives and negatives. It is easier on the legs of the animals, and absorbs some of the smell and moisture. But its dirt. How do you keep dirt clean? Well, we try to be as vigilant as possible with a daily clean up of wet materials and big poop piles. We try to get the wet areas covered with bedding to keep things solid, but sometimes that's hard. So once a month or so, we take everything down to the dirt, trying to get every poop pebble, or berry, as some call them, out of the barn. Can you see the hen above checking for edibles? They follow my trail every morning checking out the places I expose after I scrape the floors. They scratch some more looking for snacks.Then we lime the floor to neutralize odors and kill some of the eggs and whatever nasties are in the dirt. We let the lime sit till we are ready to bring everyone in, and cover it with clean, thick bedding. In the summer, I think this helps keep the flea and fly population down also. I can't tell you how many wheel barrow's full we emptied this week-end, but I'm glad its done for a while.
Doing it in this snowy, sloppy weather through mud made it all the more fun too. Look at these dirty little goats.

Small Ruminant Class - Hoof Trimming, Fecal Egg Counts and Parasites

Trimming hooves is one of those tasks that I was told by several goat owners I would only need to do twice a year. Well not with my Zola, and I am feeling quite guilty that I didn't come home and immediately give her a pedicure. A board was set up with frozen legs and the feet from the morning's lambs for us to practice on. We got to use several clippers and even large snips. I notice that Dr. Wolfgang got to handle all of the sharp objects during the class!At home, I use a pair of Fiskars garden pruners that have rounded tips. I was recommended to be cautious with sharp points for the animal, as well as myself. I'd say it is a good recommendation, as sometimes you are not working on level ground and the animals move, so there are many ways to draw blood. The nice thing about using the frozen feet is that you could trim too far to see what you were trying to avoid. The feet from the morning actually still bled a little if we went too far, so that was a good lesson.
Hoof trimming is one of those things that you need to be shown before you just pick up a goat leg and do it. This was a great place to make sure any questions were answered.

Understanding the anatomy of the hoof also helped make us want to be more diligent about keeping up with a back aggravating chore, at least in my case.My goat poop samples for the fecal egg count. Nematodirus slide that I was able to photograph through the scope.

While the fecal egg counts were being calculated, Saturday morning’s session focused on herd management, and preventing parasite infestations. We began with a discussion of the life cycle and biology of parasites. Then we learned about the basic classes of dewormers and how resistance among parasites develops. With this background, Dr. Van Saun explained different ways to monitor and prevent parasites and worms. My results were not too bad, but I do have some remediation to figure out for the kids.

Small Ruminant Class - Necropsy (revision)

FRIENDS WITH (human) KIDS OR WEAK STOMACHS - SOME BLOODY PHOTOS AHEAD.
As part of my week-end class, we observed a necropsy, or autopsy, of a ewe. The pictures follow.
I am putting the class pictures up in a couple of blogs, partly because some of you have your kids checking out the pictures with you. Here is the bloodier one. This will be interesting to some, but perhaps not to all. It was extremely educational to myself and the class participants. All of these activities tied together and made a lot of sense as a whole, and I recommend this experience to others.

I will do my best with terminology and identification, so if you know of an error, let me know and I'll try to fix it.
And so:
The class I took this week-end was the PASA Intensive: Hands-On Small Ruminant Care. It was held at the Mifflin County Youth Park in Reedsville, PA. Aside from the PA people, there were also folks from New Jersey, New York, and New Hampshire. A few people were there like I was three years ago, seeking information to determine what animals they wanted to start with, and how to take care of them. The rest of us ran the gamut of experience and sizes of herd and flocks.
The first thing we did, was check the condition of the animal. We donned gloves and felt along the spine. It was determined that this animal was a two, on a scale of one to five - five being chunky.
Of interest is the structure of the inside of the mouth. As you can clearly see, the teeth are only on the bottom, with quite a palette on the top. You wonder how those goats can eat what they do with mouth like that.The first cuts took the breath away from a few onlookers, and then the fascination began. Early into this seminar, we talked about using injections without causing scar tissue and also maximizing the benefit to the animals. We talked about how to use needles, and where to give medications subcutaneously (sub Q) and inter muscularly. Understanding proper injection sites is important for meat goat quality assurance.

We learned that the front legs aren't joined by a clavicle but muscle. They basically are hanging there. Interesting knowledge for later when we do birthing.

Dr. Wolfgang did a very neat job of skinning this lamb. There was little smell, and Hannah sopped up the blood as much as possible. A few real bleeders were clamped off. The intestines and digestive compartments. We eventually opened up some of these compartments to look at their contents. We could see where the further digested food moved along and became more smooth and watery as it proceeded. The digestive system is quite machine. Opening the chest cavity. This animal was chosen because it appeared to be in poorer health. For the purposes of finding and studying parasites, this was a good choice.The female reproductive organs. Holding an ovary (I think) and the uterine horns below the finger. The rumen, intestines (behind right), liver, and the lungs (pink). Everything is generally "clean" looking.

I missed getting a good picture of the reticulum with its honeycomb pattern, but I attached a good reference about ruminant digestive anatomy here.

Haemonchus contortus worms from inside the stomach - enlarged. If you look very closely, you can see the"barber pole" alternating stripe of the haemonchus contortus. These are one of the things we learned to battle during the week-end. They are red from sucking the blood from the animal. Enough of them can make the animal anemic, making them weak and susceptible to disease and illness.

Animal Health and Food

Good, bad, or in between, I stay away from as much medication as possible. Same for my goats. They could be someones food or breeding animal one day. I consider what I want in my food, and want nothing less for anyone else.
We do not have a vet come to our goats, because in reality - that does not happen. Maybe in a real herd crisis, but if its one animal, it would be the same as your cat or dog. In the car they go to the vet's office. A big dog crate works great.
We are with our animals every day, see changes, and look more closely accordingly. Sometimes all it takes is reassigning which stall a goat ends up in if they are getting pushed around too much.
As I was learning about sheep and goats in my quest to find the right animal for the farm, I also learned about medications. Parasite control is important for the good health of all animals. One of the first things I heard was that a lot of herds in different parts of the country had internal parasites that were resistant to medications. This was because the medications had been improperly and overly used. That made control of eggs and worms difficult, and therefore made it difficult to keep the animals healthy.
That's where rotational, pastured grazing got my interest. You basically try to stay ahead of the life cycle of the parasites by giving the animals clean fields, on a regular basis, and move them along before they contaminate themselves. Weather and growth conditions have a play in all this, and you need enough space to make it work well. That's why you read about us moving fences and putting the goats in new areas. We keep them going across the fields - water, sheds and all, to stay ahead of the parasite life cycle.
I admit that I am learning everyday, and do not have all the science committed to memory. What I do know is that when we took fecal samples to the vet last fall, which I ridiculously and painstakingly gathered one morning, only one goat - the littlest - needed worming. We treated the animal with the problem, and not the whole herd as industrial farms do. That is only one of the differences between small sustainable farms, and the farms that produce the cheap meat and eggs you buy in many grocery stores.

If you care about your health, then care about where your food comes from. Be educated about what you put in your body. Be aware of regulatory news and why its happening. Most of the news about food borne problems have not originated on the small farm but on the "factory" farms as in the article above. Visit you local farms and know your food. Its important.

Jake and His Chickens

Oh! Hello! My name is Jake.
Let me come over for a serious talk about my chickens.
These girls are Bovan hybrids that lay pretty, fat, brown eggs. People rave about the eggs all of the time.
But let me tell you - quietly - the secret.
My pies. Really! They follow me around like groupies waiting for them to cool. I admit - I like the attention.
These girls can't get enough of them, because in them are my parasites and such, which to them are quite tasty.
And I have to say, they are doing me a favor.

The more they eat, the less I re-digest as I graze.

So the less I have to get that apple flavored medicine paste that the humans think is funny when I get it stuck all over my mouth.
Well if you are going to be grossed out about it, I'll leave!

Goat Food/New Vet and good parasite results


Goat Food - The Hill - A week- make that six days later.
Let the picture speak for what the goats can do.
Today I took five Styrofoam cups with five fecal samples, straight from the shoot and one urine sample hard won from Zola, to the new vet that was recommended by goat and cat people. Would have liked another urine sample from Vinegar, but after she held it for an hour, with me practically torturing and tickling her to go, I gave up. The day wasn't getting any younger.
The only goat with any parasite problems was Twee. Hookworms. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hookworm
That it is Twee, the littlest one and the one who grazes as much as she browses sort of makes sense. She is the one that will paw the ground for food. Brought home her syringe to be given subcutaneously later, when I have an extra hand to hold her head.
So after a year, the pasturing and rotating is working out pretty well.
