Fun and Sun

Ever see a laughing goat?
A goat smiling in the sun?
A cat drinking corn?
Four supervisors for one human snow shoveler?
A grinning dog?
Its all here today at the farm.Around here its hard to get anything done without someone watching over your shoulder.
Which might be why this hen has been making her nest in the seclusion of the feed stall.
A little privacy if you want her egg please. We just have to remember to look for it before we throw down another hay bale. The warmer weather has brought out the fun and exploration in Mia.
Its easier to show off when its above freezing.
Especially when you're up this high.
But then a little R&R in the sun is nice too.
Even the goats were sunning when it got to 40F this afternoon. Good thing they could lie down and relax, since their latest Christmas tree snack was about gone.

Recycling Christmas Trees - Goat Style

This year, with all the snow, I have been hot on the trail, and hot on the phone, for Christmas trees. I mean after they are done being used for the holiday.Only real trees also. I'm sure the goats would have a go at anything for a while: plastic, tinsel. I'm just not sure what the outcome would be. And as desperate as they are for browse...but not a good idea. Here are the adults, belly up in the snow, when the first tree arrived.
What excitement! And here it is three days later.
Then the kids had at it!I have managed to get two trees for the goats so far, and I swear its keeping the peace out there. This second tree was delivered by my neighbors on Sunday. Its so big that you can't see Dave dragging it.With absolutely nothing to do after eating their morning ration of hay, the trees have provided a great distraction. Without them, the amusement would probably be picking on each other. With at least two of the girls pregnant, that's the last thing we want right now.A couple people consider pine and fir trees to be like crack for their goats.
They love them. Also its supposed to be a natural dewormer.
That would be good if its so. Here's the first tree today, after the bark was stripped by the kids.
Can you believe it?
I think its ready for the new burn pile.Another person said it made the milk bitter, but since no one is nursing yet, we don't have to worry about that. With two or three more trees lined up, I hope to get the herd through the boredom of snow, snow, snow. The neighbor's tree today, after three days of fun. The needles are almost gone. I'll let them at it one more day.
You can see the tatters of the trims and the top that the kids had nearer the barn.
They are done!

Just A Dusting

...to make it eleven days of snow in 2010.So what do you see in these two pictures?
The juxtaposition of the peaks in the sky? (So I took a couple art history classes!)
No you Ding-A-Lings. The sky is BLUE! (OK. The peaks are pretty neat too.)
The sun didn't last long today, but its nice to see again before we all start to check the real estate listings further south. Its a bit tricky getting to the barn. We have a couple tunnels blazed there, but it will be a while before the knee high boots get retired.
With some diligent scraping after every snow fall, we can see a few patches of driveway. That solar effect is helping get some of the ice off. I just want to make sure someone can find us up here.
But even without the sun, Jock enjoys the snow. If you watch the first video, you will see him dig up his Frisbee which has been under snow since before Christmas. I sort of knew where it was and could never find it. Today, Jock went right to the spot, and well... watch the video. Mia wanted to see what the big deal was with the Frisbee, and found that riding it was much more fun than chewing it. My snow boarding Mia!

Burn Pile

The burn pile in the corner of the field has been growing for months.
The debate was how many months. Close to a year? Each time there was a plan for a burn, the winds came up, the rains poured, and now the foot and a half of snow. But did that stop our neighbor Ron from making it into an event. Nope!
Did I mention its 9 degrees F out there too?His teenage girls invited some friends.
His wife invited a few friends.
I think they cooked all day. Yum!
The kids are out there sledding and screaming and making a blast out of an otherwise inside day. It was a great way to enjoy a fantastic week of snow.
And get the burn pile down. Time for us to head home across the field.
Already looking forward to the next burn. The party goes on.

A Nice Day Outside

Its hard to imagine I can think of anything to do when I don't have a half foot of fresh snow fall to move. Pants'(Cookie's) little tail just caught my eye today, as the kids were running around finding the best bite of hay. Adorable little wisp. The kids' coats are like thick, teddy bear fur now. It makes them toy like. You just want to give them hugs sometimes. I don't think they get it though. They just keep eating. We are going through bales of hay this week. There is nothing for the goats to browse on. Even the adult goats are finding themselves belly high in snow, so maneuvering is requiring more athleticism on their part. The next wave of snow is coming down, but that's tomorrow's problem at this point. Jock finally got a walk in the fields after a few days with only chasing the tractor. Sorry - escorting the tractor. He was so happy. He just loves the snow, and rolls in it, eats it, and digs in it.He and I both turned to see what was wailing in pain. I thought one of the cats was sick or something. It turns out Mia was trying to follow us on the walk, but couldn't get further than the fence. The snow was just too deep. She wailed and wailed, and then sat on the post and wailed some more. Not a cry, but a dog and human stopping in your tracks, sick wail. Even Snickers came to see what was wrong. Poor Mia. Its going to be a while before she gets to walk with us, if the forecast is correct. The snow is as far as the forecast can see. Do they have cat packs?
The pond looks a little different right now, and I'm not sure if someone new to the place would even realize there is a pond here.
Things look more stark and raw, but still beautiful. Thank goodness Jock gave me that woeful look today. It got us going on the walk. Here he patiently waits for me to finish playing with my camera so that we can continue up the hill. There are drifts, and snow filled dips, that eat up your leg where you don't expect it. Our walk was cut short because of the snow kicking down my knee high Wellies. But not too short. I suffered with cold, wet feet a little. Jock needed a good run. So did I.
